To solve this problem, many leading-edge companies have started to turn to new approaches to network management including Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN make it possible to optimize networks on the fly and quickly respond to changes in network usage without the need for purchasing new hardware.
SDN separates the control of network devices from the data they transport, and the switching software from the actual network hardware. By doing so, it provides a mechanism to dynamically adjust network behavior in response to changes in traffic usage. This increases network efficiency, makes it easier for networks to interact with applications and efficiently addresses multiple logical network topologies with a single common network fabric.
OpenFlow is a multivendor standard defined by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) for implementing SDN in networking equipment. It is fast becoming the de-facto technological means of realizing this SDN vision.

Traditional ASIC-based OpenFlow switches have had limited success in the market. This is because they carry a fundamental flaw: physical limitations that allow only a few thousand flow entries per switch and that support only a severely reduced feature set for flow matching and forwarding beyond L2/L3. As a consequence, these switches simply cannot meet the requirements of network operators and large data centres.
At the same time, vSwitches can provide improved flow table capacity and access to the full SDN feature set, but at the cost of switching throughput of less than 10 Gbps on even the highest performance processor cores.
