This paper describes how Software Defined Networking (SDN), and specifically the OpenFlow protocol, can be used to build a new category of switches and routers that, whilst being fully functional and reliable, are centrally controlled via software, which make them much easier to scale and far more economical to operate than traditional “monolithic” routers.
